WORK WITH US
TWO KICKSTART ROLES
Upstart Theatre are delighted to be offering two six-month temporary roles for young people aged 18-24. These roles are funded by the Kickstart Scheme and are only available to people aged 18-24 who are registered with a Jobcentre and are receiving Universal Credit.
About Upstart Theatre
Upstart Theatre make art for people who want to play. We create and support Playable Theatre – live performance which offers the audience the chance to take the leading role, in order to imagine how we can change the world together. We make our own live shows (both in live venues and online); we run co-creation projects with communities; we support emerging artists to learn about Playable Theatre; and we take our work beyond the theatre by making digital and physical games.
About the roles
Thee are two roles available - the Production Assistant and Marketing & Communications Assistant. Both roles will work across all four strands of Upstart Theatre’s programme: Playable Performance, Artist Development, Co-Creation and Beyond Theatre. You'll be supporting our core team of two, plus all the artists, freelancers and participants we work with throughout your six month work placement with us.
Both roles will combine online working from home, work at our shared office space, PopHub, at 41 Whitcomb St, London WC2H 7DT, and visiting theatres and other venues in London and beyond.
Production Assistant
The Production Assistant will be involved in production of new shows and projects, including attending rehearsals and development sessions and helping design teams to source props and equipment. When we’re presenting work to the public, you’ll help run the live shows, and you’ll also assist with managing online and in-person events and workshops - which will be a chance for you to learn too. You’ll work closely with our Producer to develop project plans, including identifying and building relationships with potential partners, applying for funding and evaluating projects.
Marketing & Communications Assistant
The Marketing & Communications Assistant will work across all aspects of our programme, helping us to reach audiences, players and participants across the UK and around the world. In particular, you’ll be supporting our public Playable Performance work by creating social media content and blog posts, as well as helping to keep our website up to date. You’ll also work on promoting our online Make Theatre Playable workshops, and our upcoming game releases.
Essential skills, experience and qualifications
The most essential thing you can bring to this role is your energy, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn. We’re a small team and we’re passionate about what we do. We want the people in both these roles to have the drive and motivation to effectively support all of our projects – so we need people who love theatre, games, or both.
You don’t need any specific qualifications for either role.
You should have:
- an understanding of and experience using Microsoft Word, Excel and Google Suite (including mail, drive, forms, sheets and docs), as these are the main tools we use to plan and execute projects
- good written communication and people skills, so that you can clearly and effectively communicate what we do to potential stakeholders, including audiences, funders, venues, project partners and participants
- good organisation and time-management skills, so that you can prioritise tasks and keep track of important deadlines
- the ability to think creatively, so that you can help us think up new ideas for how we can solve problems, develop new partnerships and realise new ideas
- an interest in, and passion for, theatre and/or games, so that you’ll care about the work we do and enjoy being part of the Upstart Theatre team
Hours & pay
25 hours per week, National Minimum Wage
The role will combine online working from home, work at our shared office space, PopHub, at 41 Whitcomb St, London WC2H 7DT, and visiting theatres and other venues in London and beyond.
