This month Upstart join some of London’s most innovative theatre practitioners including Coney, Alex Christofi, Crow Theatre and Folded Feather at the Tristan Bates Theatre for their infamous Midnight Matinees. Prepare to be taken on a journey that includes riots on Brighton Beach, a 1990’s school reunion, a circus in a suitcase and a post-modern pastiche extravaganza that involves cutting up words and making your own play. These regular sell out nights, recommended in Time Out’s top things to do in 2009 are not to be missed!
Upstart are planning a full scale riot – think leather, grease and Elvis versus parkas, Lambrettas and the Yardbirds. It’s March 18th, 1964 – a bank holiday weekend – and everyone’s heading down to Brighton for a bit of a holiday. The youth are just discovering what it means to be young, have money in your pocket and a thirst for life. Pity that what happened next sparked a nationwide moral panic.
