Upstart to rock back to Tristan Bates’ Midnight Matinee

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Midnight strikes, coaches turn into pumpkins and the arty folk come out to play at the Tristan Bates Theatre. The Midnight Matinees are a monthly late-night happening that test and develop new work from some of the UK’s most innovative artists. In June, they’re celebrating with Pride London by asking all their artists to revel in freedom of expression and spontaneity. The infamous Spam and Beans will be hosting the night, which promises to be a spectacle of performance poetry, interactive new media installations, comedy, music and dance.

Upstart Theatre will create another immersive piece of performance that looks at what it means to be young and free in the 1960s. Delving into the inner world of the mods and rockers Upstart will look at what effect youth culture has on mainstream society.

Upstart Theatre return to Tristan Bates’ Midnight Matinees!

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

This month Upstart join some of London’s most innovative theatre practitioners including Coney, Alex Christofi, Crow Theatre and Folded Feather at the Tristan Bates Theatre for their infamous Midnight Matinees. Prepare to be taken on a journey that includes riots on Brighton Beach, a 1990’s school reunion, a circus in a suitcase and a post-modern pastiche extravaganza that involves cutting up words and making your own play. These regular sell out nights, recommended in Time Out’s top things to do in 2009 are not to be missed!

Upstart are planning a full scale riot – think leather, grease and Elvis versus parkas, Lambrettas and the Yardbirds. It’s March 18th, 1964 – a bank holiday weekend – and everyone’s heading down to Brighton for a bit of a holiday. The youth are just discovering what it means to be young, have money in your pocket and a thirst for life. Pity that what happened next sparked a nationwide moral panic.

Everyone’s lost something. A pair of glasses. That pencil you got free at a festival a couple of weeks back and quite wanted to hang onto. The love of your life.

On Saturday 19th September, Upstart returned to the Tristan Bates Theatre as part of Midnight Matinee with a labyrinthine installation piece devised by Tom Mansfield, Laura Casey, Kate McGregor and Dan Usztan.

Here’s what we got up to last time: [click here]
