Looking for a Treasurer

Critically-acclaimed political theatre company Upstart Theatre is recruiting a Treasurer to join our highly committed Board of Trustees.

Upstart’s Board provides governance, supervision and support to our small and dedicated artistic and producing team. Trustees attend a minimum of four meetings per year, as well as working with staff to prepare financial reports, and attending Upstart Theatre’s events, including the annual DARE Festival at Shoreditch Town Hall and our touring productions in London and beyond.

Trustee meetings take place four times a year in central London, usually in the early evening. A strategy away day/evening also takes place annually. Trustees may also be invited to join in Board subcommittees, and to attend recruitment interviews as well as performances and other public events.

About Upstart Theatre

At Upstart Theatre, we see theatre as a tool to kick-start conversations about the world we live in. Inspired by the shared origins of theatre and democracy, we bring people together to take part in acts of shared storytelling, where the world onstage offers us new ways of thinking about the world offstage. The relationship between theatre, politics and dialogue is at the heart of what we do.

These values have led us to push the boundaries of what’s possible in live performance. In 2016’s Phone Home, we worked with European partners and community groups in the UK to live stream stories about the European migration crisis. We presented a pan-European performance across three stages in London, Munich and Athens, and to audiences watching online around the world, creating “a refreshingly humane response, in the current hostile climate, towards all those who are desperate or displaced” (Camden Review). In The Situation Room (2012-13), we invited audiences to step into the shoes of world leaders during a Cold War crisis, achieving “immersive theatre at its very best…stirring, involving and highly original” (★★★★ WhatsOnStage.com). Since 2016, our annual DARE Festival has brought together audiences and artists for a unique blend of performance, installation art and discussion events.

Over the last year, we’ve worked with 77 artists and 134 non-professional participants (including students, refugees and asylum seekers) to present 35 performances of 18 new works of theatre, performance and art. We’ve reached live audiences totalling 1,644, and more than 5,000 people online. Our production of The Last Ones (with Jermyn Street Theatre) was nominated for two Off-West-End Awards.

Getting Involved

Please email Artistic Director, Tom Mansfield, on tom.mansfield@upstart-theatre.co.uk, with an expression of interest (no more than 1 side of A4) and a CV, by 23:59 on Sunday 15th April. We will then arrange an informal conversation with Tom and one or more of our Trustees. The final stage would be an invitation to attend a Board meeting as an observer member.

Upstart Theatre is committed to improving the diversity of its staff and Trustees, and particularly welcome candidates from BAMER, Deaf or Disabled backgrounds.

Like all charity Trustees, the Treasurer position is an unpaid volunteer role. Upstart Theatre may cover expenses for your travel to Trustee meetings if are travelling from outside London. We will also do our best to meet any access needs you may have.
